Knocking the dust off...

I think I've been waiting for a reason to maintain yet another blog. I have one for my knitting, for my costuming, for my "real" life and a Facebook for incidentals; so why another???

Anonymity? I've changed some things on this here blog and declined to link it to any of my other blogs so I can discuss some issues I have with my hobby. Okay, one of my hobbies. And by discuss, I mean rant.

I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms. It's a medieval/renaissance reenactment group which mostly focuses on Europe from... what am I doing? Here's the link:

http://www.sca.org/

Basically, it gives me the perfect excuse to make custom gowns, both fancy and utilitarian, and hang out with my friends, gossip and quaff (y'know, when you drop the second "f" it means something completely, and alarmingly, different? yeah, me neither!) booze.

As a byproduct of my sewing madness, I've attained the rank of Mistress of the Laurel. This means I've been recognized as a master of my craft, tailoring. This leads to a couple of things- I am expected to share my knowledge (teach) and stand as an example of the peerage (don't be a douche). I don't have a problem with either of those things, in fact I kinda like leading people along the glorious path of "research" and part two keeps me from drinking too much at events.

My one bone of contention is judging. I mean, judging A&S competitions. Most frustrating are the judges themselves. If someone is entering this particular contest, they deserve feedback and constructive criticism not pretty lies because you're not willing to address some pretty obvious issues. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe you should use your status as judge to be a complete asshole; however, I also don't think everyone should go home with a trophy.

One major perk? Artisan Forums!! Love them! I get to speak with the artisan about their stuff. Face to face. No scrawled commentary written on the fly, actual conversation about something they are (hopefully) passionate about. I can't wait for Pennsic:)

So now I rant a rant of rantiness. I spent most of my day yesterday judging for our VERY IMPORTANT A&S competition. I saw some crappy sewing, some crappy research and some crappy attitudes. I seriously wanted to bash some heads in. With my goblet. But it still had rum in it:/

So yeah, research. The twisty, lovely backbone of recreation. Well, not for some of the entrants. I really, really loved the two entrants who went out of their way to document their entries using pieces that had nothing to do with their actual entries. Awesome-sauce was the judge who gave major props for something completely WRONG. Sweet! If you don't know what you're talking about, why are you judging?????

Luckily, there was an entry from a novice sewer who made a fabulous Eastern European men's ensemble. For this entry, I left my only comment- "I very much look forward to seeing your future projects!!" Seriously, this woman made a thing with a fur collar and the fur was from a specific type of rabbit used in the region of her project, which she raised! and tanned the hide herself using period techniques! and, whoa, cool and gross at the same time!!!!

So what?

So, I'm entering next year. I want to be on the receiving end of this particular process. Not sure what the entry will be, but it won't be clothing. I've already checked to see if my Laurel bars me from entering- it doesn't. Having never entered before, this should be... interesting:)

The yarn, she is here. Still waiting for the pattern:/

HA!

I ordered the yarn for my 17th century stockings! Yay Bush blood money, the perfect excuse for self-indulgent shopping:)

So yeah, 2 1/2 lb cones of Harrisville Highland in Cobalt (yes, that will make me a "bluestocking" of sorts) will be shipped Monday, along with 1 1/2 lb cone (900yds) of the Shetland in Garnet (ooooh, so pretty). I also popped by the Plimoth Plantation site to order the new pattern as mine is about 10 years old and is the f/b of an 8 1/2 x 11" page which was hastily stuffed inside the 2nd edition (c. 1990!) of 17th Century Kitting Patterns. I have a sneaking suspicion this pattern has been through revisions since.

While I'm waiting for my stuff to arrive, I think I'll work on the Gunnister Purse from the pattern book. I'd like to use the Jaeggerspun wools I bought at Pennsic (Google it) last year rather than have them sitting around with the rest of the lot, picking up bad habits and such.

There have been Campi pin-up thoughts running around my poor, underused brain lately. I'd like to redo my "Fruitseller" ensemble in the lovely wool gab I picked up for cheap. I've thoughts about using the Pfaltzgrina's corset as a template for the lining/interlining to get better support and to help disguise my alpha-boob. Hey, they totally padded stuff back in ye day! Shaddup.

So far, this has been a resounding flop.

I completed ONE tote bag (v. cute, Amy Butler fabric from the Lotus collection, Simplicity pattern) and several hats from "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" (using Paton's SWS). That's it.

Yawn.

See that's the thing, I'm having a bitch of a time finishing anything. Any. Thing. Oh, except books. I'm running through those like pork through a...well, you get it.

Just so's we're all on the same page:

Cabled aran pull-over (needs sleeves, screwed up the 1st set AND too short)
Gathered pull-over (half-way through the CF cable section)
V-neck pullover for husband (bottom of the armscye before splitting f/b)
Socks (THREE PAIRS, first sock only)
Simple cardigan (the back is almost done...Xmas pres from 2 years ago. Shame)
Tweed beret (finished increases, nearly finished w/decreases)
Selbubotter mitten (first done)
Must Have Cardigan (1/2 sleeve done)

And I keep looking for more to do!!! Knitting ADD, ya think?

Oh yeah, I also do historic costuming. I'm in the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) (Google it). So that means I also have all sorts of incomplete sewing projects. AAARRGGGHHH! Sorry, I'm a little frustrated with me.

Green wool Viking tunic (for a friend)
Blue Florentine gown
Pale green Milanese gown (haven't even started)
Byzantine cloak w/segmentae (fabric purchased, plan complete, need applique patterns)

My latest (folly) idea is to combine my SCA costuming w/my knitting. I've got 4 2oz sks of fingering weight wool, a knee-sock pattern and size 1 DPN's for hose. Not only will this give me something to work on, but (eventually) my own wool hose. I am chock full o' hope:/

One bright spot in the knitting of it all? I have completed the last repeat on the ankle of the SECOND sock of my Brigits (Ravelry it). Yay, someday I may actually have a pair of socks.

Ugh, must stop. Lucky for me, a chipmunk family has moved in. BABY CHIPMUNKS!!! I have the diabetes now, from the cute.

I want it now!

Fabric isn't here yet (darned inconvenient holiday!) and the patterns I want aren't on sale this week or next.

Impatient cat is impatient!

Guess I'll go knit.

Hi my name is...

Is it totally lame that I made this because all the cool kids are doing it? Or maybe it's because I can't link to my friends' Blogger posts from Livejounal-land.

Hmmm, could be both.

Since I made this, I think I'll use it to project-diary some holiday gifts. So don't tell!
